Autumn Term 2021

Welcome to the Autumn Term in our Year 1 classroom. We hope that you had a lovely Summer break!

We are really looking forward to diving into our topics on Castles (History) and Our Local Area (Geography). We have some super work planned for them all. There will be plenty of play based learning alongside more structured teaching sessions.

Science: In Science the children will be looking at materials and their properties. They will be learning the correct names for different materials such as wood, plastic, fabric etc and focusing on what they look like, how they feel and why they are used to make certain objects. We will will be building their scientific vocabulary to describe the properties of the materials using words such as flexible, strong, shiny etc.

Home Learning

Our main aim this term is to get the children settled back into school life, enjoying their work and developing positive attitudes to learning.

At home we would like you to focus on reading, aiming to read at least 3 times a week (daily if possible). If you need a book changing, just pop a note in the diary and we will provide a new one. We will hear the children read their books individually once a week, however informal reading also takes place daily, during phonic sessions and English lessons.

If possible we would also like you to focus on securing the phase 3 and 4 phonic sounds that most of the children covered in reception. A reminder of the sounds can be found herePerhaps choose 2 or 3 a week to focus on. Ideas could be:

- Stick the sounds on a door and the child has to high 5 them whenever they pass, saying the sound.

- Masking tape them on the stairs, and say them as you go up and down

- water paint them outside on a path/patio.

- make cards with the sounds on, hide them around the house and the children have to find them.

Outdoor Woodland Learning

We will try and get up to the woodland area whenever we can. We will always let you know via text when your child will need to be wearing their kit. An all-in-one waterproof (or waterproof trousers)  really are a good investment! We will also have some scheduled sessions with Rachel Wild and Mrs.Main, our outdoor learning specialists.

PE: The children will need to wear their PE kits to school on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Year 1 will enter school through the main entrance in the mornings, and be dismissed from the classroom door onto the playground the end of the day. If someone other than yourself is collecting your child, a note must be in their diary. We will not release them until you have been contacted.

As always if you have any queries or need to talk to us, feel free to drop a note in the diary or just grab us at the gate.
