Summer Term 2021

Welcome to the Summer Term in our Year 1 classroom. We hope that you had a lovely Easter break! The children did really well settling back into the school routine before the holidays, so we hope that they do just as well this term.

We are really looking forward to diving into our topics of Life in the Past (History) and Where in the World (Geography). We have some super work planned for you all. A lot of the everyday routines will be just as you remember them in the Spring Term. There will be plenty of time for playbased learning alongside more structured teaching.

Science: In Science the children will be looking at plants and living things. They will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees . Identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees. They will become familiar with common names of flowers, examples of deciduous and evergreen trees, and plant structures (including leaves, flowers (blossom), petals, fruit, roots, bulb, seed, trunk, branches, stem).

Spellings: This term we are going to start sending home weekly spellings for the children to learn. The children will be given different spellings depending on their ability, so don’t worry if your child’s looks a different format to another Child. The children will be tested on a Friday, a new set of spellings will also be placed in their books. You should find a spelling book in their bag, where full instructions and suggestions of how to learn spellings can be found. Please do not practise their spellings in their book, this is just for their Friday test. Also, please ensure their books are in their book bags on a Friday.

Reading: It is great to see some children making super progress with their reading, and thankyou to those parents that are really pushing the importance of reading regularly at home. One of the best things that you can do to support your child is to hear them read every day. Reading is a skill that benefits all areas of a child’s development. We are happy to change books as often as you need, just pop a note in their diary. We will hear the children read their books individually once a week, however informal reading also takes place daily, during phonic sessions and English lessons.

PE: The children will need to wear their PE kits to school on Mondays and Fridays.

Year 1 will continue to enter school through the side entrance by reception, however towards the end of the summer term we will prepare them for year 2 by entering through the main school gate. More information on this will be sent out nearer the time! As always if you have any queries or need to talk to us, feel free to drop a note in the diary or just grab us at the gate.
